Immigrants protest in Lisbon today

At 2 PM, a large demonstration takes place in front of the Assembly of the Republic against stricter immigration policies.
Organizers highlight the intimidation of workers in sectors facing labor shortages and recent legal changes.
Concerns also focus on new detention practices, including prolonged stays in temporary centers.
A similar protest in Porto in July gathered around a thousand participants.

The Portuguese government has decided to postpone the discussion of amendments to the Citizenship Law until October. In September, priority will be given to correcting the Foreigners Law, which was previously ruled unconstitutional.

This statement was made in the Assembly of the Republic by Rita Matias, Vice-Chair of the Chega parliamentary group, following a meeting with several government members.

It is now possible to book appointments under Article 15 directly through the AIMA portal.
To proceed, select: Pedido de agendamento – Cartão de Residência ao abrigo do artigo 15.
After that, you will need to upload a significant number of documents and wait for an available slot.

The Portuguese government is extending deadlines for municipal property tax (IMI) and other obligations for residents in municipalities most affected by wildfires. The exact new deadlines will be defined by the Ministry of Finance and announced soon. Taxpayers will be exempt from penalties and interest as long as they meet the new dates. The measure aims to support affected regions and ease the financial burden on families and businesses.

A new National Service for Foreigners and Borders (UNEF) was launched on August 21. This police unit will handle immigration checks, deportations, and border security, taking over tasks previously done by AIMA and PSP. UNEF starts with 1,200 officers, with plans to grow to 2,000. Immigrants are advised to carry their residence permits, visas, or official proof of legal status at all times.

Portugal’s President has vetoed recent changes to the Foreigners Law after the Constitutional Court ruled that some measures were unconstitutional. The court said that the rules limiting family reunification and the right to appeal AIMA’s decisions went against basic rights. The bill will now return to parliament for further review. Now is the time to act under the current rules! If you need support with visas, residency, or compliance, RelyOn Relocation® is here to help!
