D6 VISA - PORTUGUESE FAMILY REUNIFICATION AND RESIDENCE PERMIT

ABOUT FAMILY REUNIFICATION PROGRAM

A family reunification visa in Portugal allows Portuguese residents and citizens to bring their family members to live with them in Portugal. This visa is available to those who already hold a valid residence permit (such as work, study, or other residence permits) or citizenship in Portugal and wish to reunite with close family members.

WHO CAN APPLY FOR FAMILY REUNIFICATION

Individuals who already have legal residence or citizenship in Portugal can apply to bring the following family members:
● Spouse or partner (if in a legally recognized relationship)
● Minor children under 18 years, including adopted children
● Adult children who are dependent on the resident or spouse (e.g., still studying)
● Parents or parents-in-law who are over 65 yo or are financially dependent on the resident.
● Minor siblings if they are under the guardianship of the resident.

STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE

DETERMINE ELIGIBILITY

Ensure you meet the requirements for family reunification under Portugal’s D6 Visa. You must be a close family member (spouse, child, or dependent parent) of a Portuguese legal resident. The relationship must be legally recognized, and the sponsor must have sufficient financial means and suitable accommodation.

COLLECT REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION

Get all necessary documents, including:
• Passports & residence permit
• Proof of relationship
• Proof of financial means of the sponsor
• Proof of accommodation in Portugal
• Criminal record certificate
• Medical report
• Proof of legal entry into Portugal
• NIF

SUBMIT THE D6 VISA APPLICATION

Submit your completed D6 Visa application at the Portuguese Embassy or Consulate in your home country or country of residence. Include all required documents listed in Step 2.

After submitting your application, attend a visa interview at the embassy or consulate. The interview may involve questions about your family relationship, and you may need to provide additional information or documents if requested.

VISA APPROVAL

Once your D6 Visa is approved, you will receive notification from the embassy or consulate. Start making necessary arrangements to move to Portugal, including travel and housing.

Travel to Portugal using your D6 Visa. When you arrive, you will be legally allowed to join your family member who is a Portuguese legal resident / citizen.

APPLY FOR A RESIDENCE PERMIT

Within the legally specified time (usually within 90 days of arrival), schedule an appointment at AIMA and submit all prepared documents and provide biometric data (fingerprints and photos) for processing the residency. Make sure all documents are in order and you have provided all necessary confirmations.

The family can also come to Portugal on a tourist visa (or under a visa-free regime) and reunite with the applicant in Portugal under Article 98.2 without getting visa D6 from the Portuguese Consulate.
