Healthcare is rarely at the top of the relocation checklist — until the moment it suddenly becomes critical. That is why this conversation starts with the foundation: how the Portuguese healthcare system works and what is worth understanding before you move.
This discussion brings together Elena, Founder and CEO of RelyOn Relocation®️, who supports families through every stage of relocation, and Ivan, a family doctor in Portugal who works extensively with international patients and understands where uncertainty usually begins.
Elena: In my work with clients, I see that healthcare is one of the most anxiety-provoking topics — even for people who rarely visit doctors.
Ivan: That anxiety usually comes not from the quality of care, but from uncertainty. When people don’t understand how the system works, they feel vulnerable. In reality, healthcare in Portugal is accessible and well structured.
Elena: What would you recommend preparing before the move?
Ivan: If there are chronic conditions, it’s important to bring a short medical summary — diagnoses and current treatment. Portuguese doctors rely on clear structure rather than long medical histories. Recent test results and a temporary supply of specific medication are also very helpful.
Preparing in advance already removes a large part of the stress.
At RelyOn Relocation®️, we support clients not only with residency and documentation, but also with understanding the Portuguese healthcare system and selecting medical insurance for the entire family — including pets — so that healthcare feels clear and manageable from the start.
In the next episode we will discuss how healthcare works once you are already in Portugal: public vs private systems, the role of the family doctor, and first practical steps after arrival.
